How to choose the material of the mechanical seal
Graphite is celebrated for its excellent corrosion resistance, self-lubrication, and low friction coefficient. It also boasts good thermal shock resistance and is easy to process. However, its mechanical strength and porosity can be drawbacks, improved through impregnation and carburization. Impregnated graphite comes in two types: resin and metal. Resin-impregnated graphite resists corrosion well but only tolerates temperatures between 170-200°C. Metal-impregnated graphite has superb temperature resistance (up to 400-500°C with bronze, aluminum, lead), though it is less corrosion-resistant. As a static ring material in medium to high-speed mechanical seals, it remains the most widely used non-metallic option. Quality graphite should be dense, without easily shedding powder or staining fingers.
